Transfiguration of the Saviour (Lazaretto)
Written by chris ithacorama
On the small island Lazaretto in the middle of the harbor of Ithaca is the beautiful church of the Transfiguration.
Religion is an important part of Greek life and culture, as can easily be seen by the amount of churches and chapels of the island. Many churches and monasteries are scattered around the island of Ithaca. All churches, chapels and monasteries of Ithaca were and remain orthodox.
The religious influence of the Venetians, the British and the French who periodically occupied the Ionian Islands, never became strongly evident in the local population, but it is evident in some churches the effect of Western occupier from one side, and the eastern delivery from another. The architects and painters of past centuries had of necessity to turn to the east or west for their education.
